Watercolor and Pastel Paintings

Watercolor paintings, alone or topped with pastel, are a fairly recent direction for me. I love the ethereal and luminous qualities offered by the medium.

I sometimes use pastel as a final touch to emphasize linear elements or deepen a hue in the watercolor picture. I enjoy the possibility of “puncturing the illusion” inherent in landscape painting. Boldly laying down a velvety texture with pastel, in choice locations, fulfills this goal. In this manner, I walk the fine line between representation and abstraction.
